No. 7 USC Men Slip Up In 4-3 Loss To No. 6 Baylor In Indian Wells

March 19, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. -- The No. 7 USC men's tennis team had its winning run upended by No. 6 Baylor today in the title match at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Challenge. The Trojans had crafted a 3-0 lead over the Bears before Baylor struck back and claimed the next four singles matches to ring up a 4-3 win over USC in Indian Wells, Calif. USC goes to 17-3 overall with today's loss.

USC's doubles dominance was on display again this morning, as the Trojans drilled out key wins on courts one and three to collect the first point of the day. Freshman duo Brandon Holt and Riley Smith grabbed a 6-3 win over Baylor's Benitez/Little at the No. 1 spot, and on court three Trojans Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede matched that score with a 6-3 win over Frantzen/Tchoutakian. That punched up a 1-0 lead for USC and suspended Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven's  No. 2 doubles match to bring up singles action.

In singles, Trojans snagged first-set wins on four courts. At the No. 4 spot, USC's Jack Jaede stayed the court and gathered in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Baylor's Jimmy Bendeck to net a 2-0 advantage for the Trojans. Adding to the count for the Trojans was freshman Riley Smith, coming through again from court six with a 7-5, 6-2 win that looked to have USC in the driver's seat with a 3-0 lead. Baylor started to make some noise when #81 Johannes Schretter managed a 6-4, 6-3 win over USC senior Nick Crystal on court two, getting a point on the board of the Bears. Next, #15 Juan Benitez manufactured a comeback push against USC's #16 Brandon Holt on court one with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory that closed the gap down to one, with Baylor trailing the Trojans 3-2. The match leveled up at 3-3 when Will Little pulled off a 6-3, 7-5 win over USC's Thibault Forget at the No. 5 spot, leaving a three-setter raging on court three between USC's #45 Logan Smith and Baylor's #35 Max Tchoutakian. The Bears would generate another comeback effort in that one, fighting through for the comeback clincher on a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision that got Baylor the 4-3 win.

USC next turns to set up for its first Pac-12 clashes of the season, hosting Oregon and Washington at Marks Stadium in a week. The Trojans face the Ducks at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31 and then square off against the Huskies at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 1.
