USC Women's Volleyball Eclipses 15th-Ranked Sun Devils in 3-0 Sweep

Senior OH Skylar Fields racked up her 2,000th career kill in the Trojans’ straight-set takedown of Arizona State

LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (16-8, 10-4 Pac-12) collected a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) over No. 15 Arizona State (22-4, 10-4) at Galen Center on Friday, Nov. 3. With the win, the Women of Troy improved to 10-0 at home this fall.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Sr. OH Skylar Fields led USC with 24 kills (4e, 52att) for the second time in as many matches and finished the weekend averaging 8.00 kills per set. She hit .385 and added eight digs and a block in the win. It was her 53rd time in double-digit kills as a Trojan; and her 32nd time with 20 or more kills in a match. She now has 1,091 kills at USC and eclipsed the 2,000-kill mark in her career with the first kill of set two and sits at 2,017 total.
  • Jr. S Mia Tuaniga set the Trojans to a .358 hitting percentage (45k, 7e, 106att) and totaled 32 assists to go with 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season (24th career). She also added three kills and three service aces. Her 102 career service aces make her just the 13th Trojan to collect 100 aces in Cardinal and Gold.
  • Gr. OPP Kalyah Williams led the Trojans with four blocks and put up six kills (11att) without an error to hit .545.
  • So. MB Tyrah Ariail also had six kills (1e, 10att, .500) to go with three blocks and a service ace.
  • Fr. OH London Wijay scored three kills and added 10 digs.
  • For the Sun Devils, Marta Levinska led with 21 kills (4e, 42att, .405) to go with five digs. Mary Shroll led all players with 19 digs and added four assists and a service ace. Geli Cyr had 15 digs and added six kills but hit negative .040.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Trojans out-hit the Sun Devils, .358 to .211 and had more kills, 45-43, and blocks, 6-2. Arizona State had the edge in digs, 50-48, and picked up one more ace than USC, 5-4.
  • Fields had six of her kills in the first set and powered the Trojans to a 25-23 win. USC hit .333 with 14 kills and had a pair of service aces. Levinska collected seven kills and Arizona State hit .243 with Shroll picking up seven digs to lead all players. USC trailed by as many as four but used a 7-0 run to take a 9-7 lead and then held off ASU's comeback bid to win.
  • The score was tied eight times in the second set and Arizona State led by as many as four points (10-6) but USC fought all the way back to take the lead at 19-17 on back-to-back aces from Tuaniga and then held off another Sun Devil comeback to close out a second 25-23 win. Fields had 10 of the Trojans' 16 kills and USC hit .395 in the frame. ASU also had 16 kills but committed five errors thanks to three USC blocks and an 18-dig effort from the Trojans.
  • Fields had eight more kills in the third set and the Trojans were never threatened en route to a 25-16 win to seal the sweep. Williams had three of her kills in the third and Tuaniga racked up six digs to lock up her double-double as ASU had seven hitting errors in a .111 set.
