Freshman Kirsten Vose qualified for the A final of the 200y IM while USC's 200y free and 400y medley relays also earned A positions during the first morning of prelims of the 2016 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday (March 17) at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Vose, third in the 200y IM at the Pac-12s, lowered her personal record she set there by 0.26 to earn the fourth seed in the A final. Fellow freshman Riley Scott was 43rd in the race (1:59.35).
For the third time in four years, the Trojans qualified their 200y free relay for the A final as junior Anika Apostalon, seniors Kasia Wilk and Kendyl Stewart and junior Evan Swenson clocked a school-record 1:27.84, lowering the mark by 0.03 set at the 2014 NCAA prelims. Wilk, Stewart and Swenson were all on that relay, too, along with leadoff Kasey Carlson. Stewart and Wilk have been on all three of USC's A final 200y free relays during their career.
USC's 400y medley relay earned an A final berth for the third time in a row and for the eighth time in the last nine years as the group of sophomore Hannah Weiss, Scott, Stewart and Apostalon clocked a 3:29.89, just 0.07 off the school record. The time was tied for fourth in the morning session.
Wilk posted a P.R. in the 50y free (20.07) while Apostalon went 20.09 to qualify for the B final, 10th and 12th overall, respectively, in the morning. Wilk clinched her first scoring swim in the race since 2013 while Apostalon, a transfer from San Diego State, earned her third scoring swim in the event.
In the 500y free, freshman Allie Wooden was 36th (4:44.18), junior Chelsea Chenault was 45th (4:45.61), freshman Elizabeth Stinson was 50th (4:46.57), freshman Madison Wright was 52nd (4:46.70) and senior Joanna Stenkvist was 61st (4:48.52).
